What I’ve Been Watching #24

Welcome back to WIBW! This time around we have mini spoiler-free reviews of a comedy, a Star Wars movie and DINOSAURS!

Life of the Party

I was drawn towards seeing Life of the Party because it stars Melissa McCarthy as a character that from the trailer reminded me a little bit of Suki from Gilmore Girls, as well as Gillian Jacobs who I loved in Community and Love. The trailer even made me chuckle a bit, which is always a plus. Still, my expectations felt potentially misguided (ever the pessimist), because decent female-led comedies are sadly a rarity.

Life of the Party starts off a bit slow – I distinctly remember sinking a little in my seat dreading the time that would be wasted watching the rest of the movie. Thankfully, it does pick up and find its feet. There are a few laughs to be had and a healthy dose of female empowerment, too.

Expectation: 3
Reality: 3

Solo: A Star Wars Story

SIGH. I feel like Star Wars fatigue is well and truly settling in now with this instalment. I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise anyway, but Solo committed the biggest movie sin…it was boring. The story is dull, there’s no real sense of adventure that several of the other Star Wars entries manage so well, and I struggle to connect the Han Solo of this movie to what he becomes in the future. Yawwwwwn. They seriously need to get back to making films like The Force Awakens already.

Expectation: 3
Reality: 2

Jurassic Park: The Fallen Kingdom

I LOVE dinosaurs, and also the first Jurassic World was pretty decent so obvvviously I had to go and see the sequel.

I thought it was quite enjoyable, but it did have a few silly spanners thrown in (which is saying a lot for a movie that imagines we live in a world where dinosaurs are brought back from extinction), and it wasn’t as fun as the first. I think this time around they wanted something darker and grittier and tbh all I really wanted was more dinosaurs doing stuff.

Definitely go see this at the cinema to experience it how it’s meant to be – just go in with the expectation of a slightly distorted plot and Bryce Dallas Howard swapping running in heels to running in more practical boots.

Expectation: 3.5
Reality: 3

What movies do I want to see next then?

I am slightly worried that this movie is going to end up being overly artsy judging by the trailer – but I like Toni Collette so I’m willing to give it a go. Modern horror movies are so hit and miss so I’ll just be hoping it scares me without resorting to cheap jump scares.

Expectation: 3.5

There’s a Secret Screening coming up at Cineworld soon and I’m thinking it’s most likely going to be Skyscraper. Although this sort of film doesn’t usually tickle my fancy, I do love The Rock and the plot just sounds utterly ridiculous. I’m expecting your average popcorn blockbuster, so if it’s any better than a 3, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Expectation: 3

I agree wholeheartedly about Jurassic World, it was good fun (not as fun as the first) and I liked the nods to the original film, however, there wasn’t nearly enough Dino action and the ending was just so ridiculous…

I disagree wholeheartedly about Solo. I thought it was pretty damn epic! I thought it was more like the originals, funny and great character development for Han. The most recent films (not including Rogue One) are lacking the Star Wars spark!! I really liked it, but I’m a Star Wars fan….

Yeah, it definitely wasn’t as fun as the first and the ending was too much. How do they even come back from that now??

It’s so crazy how different our opinions of Solo are…I almost fell asleep!

I know, surely they are going to be held accountable?!

Haha I know, I’ve heard such mixed reviews about Solo.
