What I’ve Been Watching #15

The Florida Project

This was another one of those films I wasn’t too bothered about seeing. I thought it would be pretty decent given the hype it’s been getting so figured I might as well give it a go.

I did enjoy The Florida Project in the sense that I thought it was a decently made movie, but it had it flaws. I wasn’t particularly invested in the characters so I think the ending didn’t have the impact it was designed to. That could’ve just been me, but I struggled to sympathise with the titular character or her kid.

However, I did really dig Willem Defoe’s character – he was great. I kind of wish the story had been more focused on him but I’m probably in the minority!

It’s worth watching this film, but it’s one you can wait for on DVD.

Expectation: 3.5
Reality: 2.5

A Bad Moms Christmas

Like a lot of sequels, this just didn’t live up to the first. Although it had some funny moments, a lot of the humour just wasn’t “me”. The screening was mostly women and they laughed A LOT so maybe I’m just not into the sorts of jokes most women are? Idk. It was enjoyable enough but not the surprise hit that Bad Moms was.

Another one to wait for the DVD, but maybe once it hits the special offers where you can buy a handful for £20.

Expectation: 2.5
Reality: 2.5

Justice League

I was not looking forward to this movie, tbh. I really did not like Batman Vs Superman (and as a big Bats fan, it was hugely disappointing). On the bright side, Justice League was marginally better than BvS I think, but on the down side it was also a pretty messy plot line, some poor dialogue and WAY too much CGI.

What I did like though was getting to know some of the characters…although a major pitfall of this film was not having the time to properly introduce them.

I laughed a couple of times, but most of the time I was wishing that more of the film was dedicated to conversations between the characters rather than overly stylised action scenes. Oh well!

Expectation: 2.5
Reality: 2.5

What’s next in the “want to watch” category, then?

By the time you read this, I will have already seen Battle of the Sexes which I am really looking forward to and have been for what feels like forever! When/if we’ll see Murder on the Orient Express remains to be seen (I listed this in my last WIBW as one of the films I would next be seeing), so here’s a couple coming up that I have high hopes for!

The Disaster Artist

I cannot WAIT for this film. I love The Room and recently met Tommy Wiseau at a screening of it. He’s genuinely as bizarre as this movie trailer and his reputation implies!

Expectation: 4

The Greatest Showman

The songs are written by the same lyricists as La La Land and it stars Hugh Jackman and Zac Effron…need I say more?!

Expectation: 3.5

I have similar feelings towards Justice League – I do feel like superhero movies are just being churned out so much they’re losing their value!

I am still enjoying the Marvel movies as Ragnarok and Homecoming were both a bit different to expected…but otherwise there’s a lot of superhero fatigue I think!
