My Favourite Quotes from Amy Poehler’s “Yes Please”

Amy Poehler's Yes Please Quotes

A few months ago I finished reading Amy Poehler’s autobiography, “Yes Please”, and absolutely loved it. I always knew she’s a funny lady, but I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy the book as I was pretty meh about Tina Fey’s “Bossypants”, despite feeling that Tina Fey might just be my spirit animal.

One of the things I absolutely loved about “Yes Please”, other than how hilarious parts of it were, was the profound thoughts and expressions that Amy has about things such as ageing, self confidence and careers. Her life is incredibly interesting for a woman of any age, and she is very honest about all aspects, refusing to gloss over the times that were less than favourable.

So, as I loved it so much I thought I’d share my absolute favourite quotes.

On ageing:

“I think we should stop asking people in their 20s what they ‘want to do’ and start asking them what they don’t want to do. Instead of asking students to ‘declare their major’ we should ask students to ‘list what they will do anything to avoid.’ It just makes a lot more sense.”

YES, YES, YES. This one really resonated with me, because it does drive me mad how people even younger than 20 are forced into thinking about what they want to do with their lives. Some are pushed into making the wrong decisions for them and it breaks my heart.

I’ve actually been very lucky that I fell into a career that involves writing, something that I’ve loved since a very young age, but I know not everyone is so lucky.

On self confidence:

“Nobody looks stupid when they’re having fun”

I love this because on certain occasions in my life I have taken myself too seriously and not just acted a bit silly every once in a while. I think this has changed and I am more willing now to not have to take things so personally.

On careers and success:

“Saying ‘yes’ doesn’t mean I don’t know how to say no and saying ‘please’ doesn’t mean I am waiting for permission.”

Amy is so right about this. We put so much weight into our answers to others’ questions in the way they want us to sometimes. Saying ‘yes’ and ‘please’ are not weaknesses.

On life in general:

“Sleep helps you win at life.”

She’s really speaking my language here, haha!

Have you read “Yes Please”? If so, I’d love to know your favourite quotes! If not, go read it immediately, you won’t regret it!
