What I’ve Been Watching #17

It seems like Cineworld have crammed in loads of Unlimited screenings over the past few weeks, so the WIBW posts have been coming thick and fast! Soz about that…unless y’know, you enjoy them in which case you’re welcome.

I love me a bit of Jake Gyllenhaal. Not because he’s easy on the eye (although c’mon, damn), but because DAMN he can act. A few month’s back Liam introduced me to Southpaw, and it’s just one of many examples of JG acting his damn socks off. I love it.

Stronger is the true story of Jeff Bauman who survived the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. As you can imagine, this drama has some incredibly moving moments but also has lighter and humorous moments too. All the performances were good across the board, and I liked seeing the dynamic between all of Jeff’s family members as well as the girlfriend, Erin.

The real question here though is what fountain of youth is Jake Gyllenhaal drinking from and how do I find it? He somehow looks as young as he did in The Day After Tomorrow which came out in 2004. HOW?!

I have to admit, I went into Jumanji sceptical. If you read my last WIBW, you’ll know I said I was only going to see this because of The Rock. Well, I can happily admit that my scepticism was unnecessary.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle made me laugh on several occasions and was definitely a fun movie to watch. It does fall into that annoying trope where most of the funny lines are in the trailer, but there were a few nice surprises. It’s basically a “body swap” type comedy and most of the comedy comes from this but it works really well.

They also pay a really tasteful homage to Robin Williams’ character from the original movie, which definitely raised a smile.

Expectation: 2.5
Reality: 3

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Before seeing The Last Jedi, we rewatched The Force Awakens to remind ourselves of where things left off and OMG I forgot how much fun that movie is. I’m not really a big Star Wars fan, but The Force Awakens was just a joy from start to end tbh. So expectations for The Last Jedi were somewhat high.

Which makes it all the more disappointing that I disliked more than I liked in The Last Jedi. The main problem I found was that the plot was kind of messy and it also had several moments that felt like they were pandering to kids, and some other moments that felt very much “just for fans”. I could live with these issues if I didn’t find it boring at times…

There’s only one stand out scene that I really enjoyed, and several that kind of made me cringe.

What’s next?

I feel like I’ve been waiting FOREVER for The Greatest Showman that should hopefully feature in my next WIBW, but here’s a couple of other films coming out that I’m looking forward to seeing.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

I saw the trailer for this a while ago and I think this is going to be a great movie. It’s framed as a dark comedy so I’m optimistic!

Expectation: 4

Pitch Perfect 3

I am not expecting much from PP3 as it feels like that awkward third movie to make a trilogy where the characters have separated and are drawn back together in an awkward manner for the sake of the story. However, I want to give it a chance and see if I can be proven wrong!

Expectation: 2.5

Jessica knows what’s up – Hugh Jackman and, most importantly, Zac Efron – has to be a winning combination!

I found quite a lot of it a bit cringe which was a shame! But general consensus seems to be that people love it! Enjoy Jumanji, it’s a lot of fun! The Rock and Kevin Hart are so good (as is Jack Black!). You’re right, you definitely can’t go wrong with a bit of Jackman and Efron! So excited! x
