Here’s Some Blogging Myths – Busted!

Do you remember that show Myth Busters? What a classic.

Anyway, I thought it was about time that a few blogging myths were busted – because I think there are definitely some misconceptions in the blogging world about certain aspects of it, and that new bloggers (as well as those who have been around a while) might benefit from clearing up a thing or two.

Oh and yeah, there is a slight focus on sponsored posts in this because y’know, hot topic and all that.

“I’m breaking the law if I use do-follow links!” – MYTH.

You aren’t about to get arrested if you use do-follow links for a sponsored post/review. Google may be likely to penalise your site following their own rules over the requirement to no-follow links, but no one’s going to cuff you.

Ultimately, it’s up to you if you want to agree to do-follow links when collaborating with brands. You aren’t hurting anyone (except potentially your Google ranking).

HOWEVER – always, always add a disclaimer for any sponsored content. Don’t be a dick about it and try an hide it.

“My blog will never be popular because I don’t have a niche!” – MYTH.

Sigh. I have read so many articles that tell you that you absolutely have to have a niche otherwise your blog will fail miserably and you’ll never be happy. One of the most popular blogs I know (and also notably one I always go back to) is Hannah Gale’s blog. You could group it as “lifestyle”, but she covers so many different topics and guess what? She’s ruddy successful in doing it.

“I need to charge X amount for a review post!” – MYTH.

If I had £1 for each time I see a blogger in a Facebook group, or over on Twitter, asking how much to charge to review a product I would be able to retire now.

The fact is, you don’t have to charge anything if you’re happy to review a sample. It doesn’t make you less of a blogger. Honest. In fact, confession time. If I get sent a product the review, I *personally* don’t charge extra for it. I’m happy with just receiving the product. If I wasn’t happy to receive the product, I’d just say no to the opportunity.

HOWEVER – it is up to you if you do want to charge extra. I’m not here to tell you that you shouldn’t. I only charge for sponsored posts but it’s your blog, so your rules.

“I have to be on WordPress to have a ‘real’ blog!” – MYTH.

Uh. Nah. I much prefer being on WordPress as I find it more adaptable and customisable but not everyone is the same. Blogger is perfectly fine, and so is tumblr, squarespace or whatever the flip else you want to blog from.

“You should never approach a brand to collaborate, they should always come to you!” – MYTH.

I can see why people might find it rude to approach a brand and basically say “hey send me stuff plz” but it’s all in the way you approach it. My first collab on my blog was with a brand I approached. I simply let them know I liked their products and their brand and that I was interested in reviewing some products. Badabing, badaboom – they sent me several goodies of my choice to review.

    Love this! There certainly are a lot of blogging myths. I definitely don’t believe the one about not approaching brands. I think if there’s a particular brand you love and would like to work with approach them. Done in the right way you can get some great opportunities and you don’t look like a freeloader!

    Love the blog post idea, i find the idea of sponsered posts and colloborations such a taboo subject in the world of blogging where no one wants to talk or share advice on. I thought I would ask the difference between a sponsered post and being sent some items for review? Also when you did approach a brand, did you email or go through social media? I have approached a couple brands I do genuinely love and use but have had no replies 🙁

      Thank you! Yeah, there’s so many different views on it all that muddies the water and also makes it a difficult topic to discuss. To me at least, a sponsored post is content where they pay you to write about a particular topic, whereas review posts are when samples are sent. I’ve done both in the past but mostly product reviews. I approached the brand via email as I feel like they’d be more likely to see it! Depending on the size of the brand, you probably want to try and find an individual’s email address rather than a ‘generic’ one but I know it’s not easy! Keep at it, and maybe try and work with smaller brands first to build a ‘portfolio’ of posts to approach bigger brands with as examples x
